10 TOP TIPS ON A GUILT FREE VALENTINE'S DAY

In the UK and many Western countries, Valentine’s Day has become the traditional day when people express their love for each other by giving gifts and cards often without thinking about the impact they have on the environment.
Nigel Berman, founder of http://www.nigelsecostore.com/ has come up with ten top tips to help you have a low-carbon and guilt-free Valentine’s Day.

1) An estimated one billion Valentine’s cards are sent each year, making it the biggest card-sending occasion after Christmas. The UK greeting card industry is worth nearly £1.47 billion annually, according to figures from the Greeting Card Association.1 The Greeting Card Association’s latest report puts the average number of greeting cards sent in the UK at 31 per person a year. Multiply that by the population of the UK2 and imagine all the waste!

Supermodel By Day, Superhero By Night

With the title of being a Supermodel and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, It wasn't going to be too long before Gisele Bündchen would hailed as the superhero everybody loves. We say this because the international star is currently involved in a new web-based animated series with the purpose of teaching a younger audience on how they can do their part to save the earth.

Nutrition Definitely Rocks !

While surfing through the web one of the Recognise staff stumbled on Nutrition Rocks and felt compelled to share it with everyone. Once actually going through the site myself, I understood why, this is a place where people who really want to live a healthier lifestyle and believe in the notion 'If you look good, you feel good' would really appreciate.

Sainsbury's Fashion ?

Sorry to burst your bubble but no.. Sainsbury's will not be launching high street fashion stores next to H&M while that may be a weird move from the grocery giant, a flamenco-style dress inspired by the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing has been created with only reused Sainsbury's carrier bags.

Obama Just Stepped Up In Our Good Books

If Obama couldn't be loved even more right now. The President of the United States just got ahead of his peers as just two months ago, we reported Daryl Hannah had voiced her opinions urging President Obama to re-instate the solar panels that Former President Reagan had removed during his time at the office. Well, we can gladly say Obama has listened to his constituents and announced plans for solar panels to be built back onto the White House by spring 2011.

If You're Ever In Manchester...

If you're ever passing through Manchester, check out the first ever Kuyichi store that just opened on the 12th August. For those who haven't heard of Kuyichi, Kuyichi is an ethical fashion brand for fashion forward young people, established in 2000, they were actually the first denim label to make good use of organic cotton.
If you're wondering what Kuyichi means 'It comes from the Peruvian god of the rainbow, who, as myth suggests, pinched the colours of life from the Taquille Indians. They weaved glorious blankets and in return Kuyichi returned their colours.'

Jenna Dewan shows her animal side in new PETA ad

“I couldn’t believe that that is what happens for a wallet or a purse,”

The Step Up actress decided to swap her dance costume for snakeskin body paint, in order to express her opposition on the use of fashion accessories made from snakes, lizards, alligators and all other animals in the new "Wearing Exotic Skins Kills" PETA ad.

Check out behind the scenes of the shoot & an interview with the star

“There are many fashionable and cruelty-free alternatives to using real animal skins. Fake snake, mock croc, and pleather are a few realistic and luxurious materials that can be used to achieve the same look—without stealing someone else’s skin. Popular retailers such as Victoria’s Secret, H&M, Overstock.com, Cole Haan, and Nike have all signed PETA’s pledge promising never to sell exotic skins.” - PETA

Top 5 Household Items That Really Suck (Energy, That Is)

DVICE recently did some research on the top 5 household items that prevent you from doing your bit for the environment. Some are our favorite toys and some well..... we only bring them out when we have chores to do.

Check em out !

No.1 - The 65-inch Panasonic Viera TH-65VX100U
Energy consumption: 575 watts (in operation) !

Green tips: Every other television out there — from LCDs and LEDs to projection TVs — will use less energy. Going for a different set is really your only option here

No.2 - Origin Genesis Gaming PC

Energy consumption: 585 watts (in operation)

Green tips: You probably have your PC plugged into a power strip, right? Well, when you're all done, shut it off to help combat standby power. Other than that, either use your machine less (a huge bummer), invest in different parts to lower its power consumption (a lot of work) or buy a new machine altogether (a lot of dough). Another suggestion? Laptop.

No. 3 - Dyson DC23 Canister Vacuum

Energy consumption: 1,400 watts (while on)

Green tips: It's easy to become reliant on a vacuum, but don't forget about brooms and mops for surfaces such as hardwood and tile. Or, hey, maybe buy a vacuum that doesn't require a nuclear reactor to run!

No. 4 - Xbox 360 Elite
Energy consumption: 165 watts (while playing a game)

Green tips: Honestly? Consider a Wii. It sips power. Of course, that means you'll also have to consider playing Wii games, so… you know

No. 5 - Life Fitness Platinum Treadmill
Energy consumption: 2,400 watts* (in use)

Green tips: The guiding principle when buying a treadmill is it'll use 750-1,000 watts per one horsepower. Going for a lower horsepower machine will help keep your costs down. There's another thing you can do, though — run outside. It's free!

*DVICE had to estimate this one, though we found a spec sheet that said the Life Fitness treadmill required a 120 voltage line rated for 20 amps. We'd take this figure as a minimum, though, as the formula in "green tips" would have the Platinum using more.

STAR TIPS!

Regina King

”My green tip is to go with the clean diesel — the clean-burning diesel fuel engines. Because with a lot of people, the Prius is not quite big enough if you have kids, dogs, you’re transporting the boys to football practice…the Prius doesn’t really work for that.”

Tyler Labine

”My green tip is to compost. Compost everything you possibly can.”

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT YOU COULD TURN PAPER INTO A FLOWER?

At Recognise Magazine were now using 'Of the earth' seeded, handmade computer paper to send out invitations for our up-coming launch party.

This handmade lotka paper is made in the highlands of Nepal by rural craftspeople in an enviromentally friendly process with 50% recycled content.
Not only can you recycle this paper, you can compost it or even plant it and watch flowers bloom. Now how cool is that?!

These light weight seed embedded printer safe sheets are best for single sided printing. They will accept laser or inkjet printing on most machines. Don't worry about the seeds breaking your printer, the seeds are so tiny that your equipment is safe from any harm.

The seeds found in the paper include 15 annual species which tolerate partial shade, need 4 hours a day of direct sunlight and grows to about 32. These seeds include; Red corn poppy, Spurred Snapdragon to Monkeyflower and Creeping Thyme.

The whole process is not only earth friendly but also provides a large community with a healthy enterprise. So use these to write letters and print directions to your special events, and be sure to include a note to let the recipient know the paper will bloom if planted!

WAYS 2 GO GREEN

A lot of people including myself want to go GREEN and a make a difference in everyday life. Whether in the office, at college/school little things can make the biggest difference. So I've put together ways for us all to make a change in our everyday routines.

1. Start by recyling outside your home. Try investing in special waste containers at work, in different colours to identify what goes into each container.
2. Pack your lunch in reusable containers. Forget plastic bags!!
3. I personally *LOVE* candals! They're so cute and romantic and just create such a cosy atmosphere. Not only that but they save you electricity. If you're leaving the room for more than 5minutes, switch the lights off. It'll save you a lot of money!
